Modesty

I had a conversation with a good friend earlier this week, you know who you are, about modesty here at BBC.  This person seemed to feel there were still modesty issues when I felt quiet the opposite, so I decided I needed to do some thinking about what modesty really is...  so now I shall share my few small conclusions with you in hopes of getting feedback and adding to the discussion.

  • The question I started with is "What is modesty if it is not simply a means to help keep the opposite sex from lusting?"
  • I decided that though the term modesty seems to be a vague term, it is "Dressing/presenting one's self in a nonsexual way."
  • Modesty is not a set law, but rather a thing of interpretation.  By this I mean it is a thing of intentions and perception.
    • Intentions deal with the dresser/presenter.  He or she is immodest if they intend to gain attention through presenting one's self as sexually appealing.
    • Perception deals with those who are judging what is modest or immodest.  The one observing the dresser gives judgement on whether or not the person is dressed modestly

I then deduced that there are 3 principles that if followed would save from the problem that we always talk about with immodesty.

  1. The dresser, with his or her intentions, needs to understand and be sensitive to observer's perceptions.
  2. Those who judge whether the dresser is modest or not need to strive to understand and be sensitive to the dresser's intensions.
  3. Everyone needs to take full responsibility for all sin in their intentions and judgement.

In conclusion, I think sometimes we have more of a judgement problem than a modesty problem.  People condemn the way others dress without knowing or understanding the person, and the intentions they may have had.  Also as a guy i would like to say that modesty is important, but if you are striving to take away all temptation for a guy to lust, then you will always fail.  There is no way i have ever seen a girl dress that would take away all temptation for guys to lust.  SO I would say, don't strive for that, but strive to keep from dressing in a way that things will catch a guy's eye when he's not even looking for it.  That's an obtainable goal.  and to let you know my perception, i would say i don't know a single person here who isn't good at that...  so as far as i'm concerned, BBC is a place full of modestly dressed girls, but also a place full of judgement problems.

There ya have it, please tell me what you think!!! PLEASE!

beating a dead horse?

There was a question about my definition of false morality, and what that all means, so i decided to explain this in a little more depth.  so take it for what it's worth, and leave some comments!

The idea behind false morality is captured in the example of a BBC student.  I mark worth struggle with lusting over women.  Though here at bbc i don't very much, so i feel that i have grown morally in that area.  Since I don't lust that something has changed, but when i go home, and the temptation is presented, I realize that really that morality i felt i had was false, because there was no change in me, just a change in circumstance.

It's like a fat kid who works at a buffet, he will stay fat as long as he stays around that buffet, but if you put him in a place with no food he will lose that weight right?  Still has anything really changed in him?  or is it just circumstance?

Also even more so i find myself alot like that fat kid, he loses weight and then when he gets around a buffet again, he eats even more because there was no change...  When i return home i struggle with lust even more!  Twice as much, because there was no change in me, there was only change in my circumstance which deprived me of my true desire.

Also one last thing to recognize is that i'm not saying that fleeing temptation is wrong...  there must be good from it for we are commanded to do it, I just don't think that fleeing it will change us alone, and i believe that we believe that by fleeing temptation here at BBC all the sudden we've changed, because somehow we don't see ourselves committing these sins anymore.  Still it's not the actions that matter, it's the heart.  I believe fleeing temptation is useful in as much as it helps you to be able to give God the place of honor in your life.  So it sets up circumstances for you to focus on God, and in doing so strengthen yourself and submit yourself to him, so that he does take the place of honor in your life.  Then you have changed, when you believe the gospel and give Christ the supreme place of honor in your life, that is what changes you.

thanks for the question man, it actually helps me think through my own ideas.

meditations in harmartiology part 4

Hey, here is my fourth meditation on sin... enjoy

A thought popped into my head tonight, I wonder if false morality is killing my view of Christ?  I mean if I don’t sin, just because the sin isn’t available, have I really stopped sinning?  And if not, then this false morality that BBC encourages is really hurting us not helping us, by covering up the problem, not fixing it.  Also, have you really accomplished anything if you kill a sin for any other reason than God being more desireable than it?  For example, if I ceased to lie about how much reading I did in a class, or stoped cheating on a tests, only because I was afraid of getting kicked out of school, is that glorifying to God?  It’s not like God has taken the place of honor (or become my first priority) in that part of my life, no, not getting kicked out of school has got the place of honor.  To me this really seems like trading one form of sin in for another.

Ultimately I believe we will be sinning until the day that God, Jesus Christ, Has the place of honor in all areas of our lives!

Meditations in Harmartiology part 3

This is my third meditation in the subject of sin.  Once agian it is not always good to focus on sin too much but it's something I've put alot of thought into lately, and why I have been getting caught up in the decietfulness of sin.  I just have read back through my last post and the more I think about it the more I think what I said is true.

During bible confrence I went to Doc Palmer's workshop the first day, now I do admit that I was way too tired and didn't catch everything but it seemed that he was saying generally thing...

People don't commit sin because they don't know they wern't supposed to, we all commit it even though we know we shouldn't (which I mark worth, would agree with to this point.).  Therefore just preaching to someone and saying that you shouldn't sin because God doesn't desire you to sin is useless and actually counterproductive.

Now this post is not to tear down what he has said, and even if I wanted to I couldn't be fair to him because i did not listen well enough.  But I agree with the first half of what he said, yes, most of the time we do know we shouldn't sin, but I believe that every time we sin it really comes down to a trust issueIf we know we shouldn't sin, but yet we do anyways, we don't trust that God's ways are really better than our own.  We don't trust that he is truely more desireable than sin!

Tell me what ya think!

Meditations in Harmartiology part two

Well I'm back on here again to talk about the same subject.  Again this post will reflect some of my belief on sin.  This is a idea that I write on in here is one that I began to meditate on freshman year, and occasionally ever since.  It's one I've been alittle weary to post because I'm not sure about it yet and I do fear that it could turn out to be wrong and misleading.  Still I desire to show you what have been affecting my life, so here it is:

I have began to wonder if we can really make these categories of sin.  For instance we say or I have committed the sin of lust, or I have committed the sin of covetousness, or of jealousy, and so on.  Now I understand that the bible does speak of these sins, but I almost wonder if those aren't the sins at all.  Maybe there really is only one sin, and those things that are called sins are just the symptoms, or the outworkings of that one sin.
So you may wonder what is this one sin then?  I would submit that the one sin would be placing anything above God in your life.  That is truly the only sin, and that will cause, or work out into the actions that we call sin.  We lust because we place enjoying the idea of sex with a person more than we enjoy God, and we cheat on tests because we desire that A+ more than we desire God.  So the lust and the cheating is really just the outworking of the one real sin.
When you think of it, that could very well be why when you break one part of the law you break the whole law.  Because every sin is the same, in that it is always putting something above God.  This would also mean it has been vain every time that I felt proud that I have never smoked, or drank, or done drugs...  Because when I lust, or when I cheat in a class, I commit the one true sin!  Why do you think the first commandment is have no other gods above the Lord?  Because anything that is in the place of honor in your life is something you worship, and therefore it is a god to you!

I hope this spurs up thoughts in your mind, write back about what you think!

In the Love of Christ,
Mark Worth
